To celebrate its anniversary, Les Deux Magots tells its story through an exhibition paying tribute to the creative minds who frequented the place. You can discover it from April 30th to September 22th 2024.
A place at the crossroads of arts, Les Deux Magots is the stage of a great cultural theatre where great plays have been performed for 140 years. Nourished by the artistic aura of the Saint-Germain-des-Prés district, the Maison has welcomed the greatest names in literature, music, cinema and fashion : from the poet Paul Verlaine to the film director J.J. Abrams, and among others Ernest Hemingway, Simone de Beauvoir and Paul McCartney.
This retrospective is based on archive photos and goes from our origins, a novelty shop opened in 1813, to the literary café of today.
It is said that any thought that has ever crossed the mind of any visitor to the Deux Magots neighbourhood (which is imbued with truly unique charm) has lingered and endured even to this day – blending into the fragrance of hot chocolate and the echoes of soothing jazz music.
So, do not be surprised if, once you are comfortably relaxing on a red banquette seat, some traces of Picasso or Dora Maar inspire your daydreams with nostalgia, as you dine on truly Parisian specialties.
Or instead of sitting indoors, if you decide to choose a table on our outdoor café terrace, across from the historic church of Saint-Germain-des-Prés, it might just happen that you are seized by a sudden urge to change the world ! Maybe a pinch of Jean-Paul Sartre’s or Simone de Beauvoir’s musings have got mixed in with the cinnamon in your tarte tatin …
