Writer's Monday with Eric-Emmanuel Schmitt
Writer and playwright Éric-Emmanuel Schmitt will be the guest of honour at our Lundi des Ecrivains literary event on Monday January 22 at 6.30pm.
He will present his new novel “La rivale” (Editions Albin Michel), a lively and mischievous account of the life of La Callas, seen through the eyes of a mysterious rival…
This event is free of charge, and only available by reservation at email@example.com (places are limited).
It will be hosted by Baptiste Liger, Editorial Director of Lire Magazine Littéraire.
“Callas? You’ll see: soon no one will remember her…”.
Who’s speaking? A certain Carlotta Berlumi. The name of this mysterious old lady means nothing to anyone, yet she stubbornly maintains that she had her hour of glory at La Scala and was Maria Callas’ greatest rival. To hear her tell it, the Greek singer managed, by dint of maneuvers and tricks, to consign her to oblivion, but she returned the favor by precipitating her downfall.
Is Carlotta mistaking her desires for realities? Has she found in Callas the scapegoat for her failures, the magical explanation for her setbacks and frustrations?
Through this comical and unforgettable character, Éric-Emmanuel Schmitt paints, with incomparable humor and malice, a portrait of a little-known Maria Callas. As an expert on music and the intricacies of the soul, he invites us behind the scenes of opera and the human heart.
