The 92nd Prix des Deux Magots, October 6, 2025

Chaired by Étienne de Montety, the Prix des Deux Magots is one of France’s oldest literary awards, and one of the major autumn prizes.

The 92nd winner will be announced at the award ceremony on Monday October 6, 2025, at 12pm, at the Café des Deux Magots. The winner will succeed Jean-Pierre Montal, crowned in 2024 for his novel La Face nord (éditions Séguier).

The €7,700 Prix des Deux Magots is awarded to a French-language book published during the year, with the aim of revealing a literary talent, whether a novelist or essayist, who has just emerged or who, in the eyes of the jury, does not yet enjoy the recognition he or she deserves. Guided by their enthusiasm and their personal favourites, the jurors may nevertheless award their vote to a work that meets other criteria.

Three grand prizes for a historic house

Created in 1933 as a reaction to the Prix Goncourt, judged to be too academic, and awarded to Raymond Queneau for his first novel Le Chiendent, the Prix des Deux Magots has rewarded the works of such famous authors as Antoine Blondin, Albert Simonin, Pauline Réage, Elvire de Brissac, Roland Topor, Michel Del Castillo, Geneviève Dormann, Sébastien Japrisot, Bernard Frank, Christian Bobin, Jérôme Garçin… True to his vocation as a discoverer, he has honored and revealed numerous authors, including Marc Dugain, Serge Joncour and, more recently, Pierre Adrian.

Les Deux Magots is also home to two other literary prizes, testifying to the cultural openness of the premises.

The Prix Pelléas, created in 1997 and chaired by Alain Duault, rewards each year “a work on music with the finest literary qualities”. It will be awarded on Tuesday April 8, 2025, at 7pm.

The Prix Apollinaire, a veritable “Goncourt of poetry” created in 1941 and presided over by Jean-Pierre Siméon, is awarded every year in November.

Alongside its awards, the Café de Deux Magots organizes a “season” of literary meetings (the “Lundi des écrivains”) and concerts (the “Jeudis du jazz”), attended by many of today’s cultural personalities.
